Objective: To investigate the expression and significance of autophagy-related gene Beclin 1 in radiation-induced salivary gland injury tissue. Methods: A total of 115 paraffin-embedded blocks including 25 samples with submandibular adenitis,25 submandibular gland degeneration,21 radioactive submandibular adenitis,19 radioactive submandibular gland degeneration and 25 specimens of normal salivary gland as control were studied.Immunohistochemical method was used to determine the expression of Beclin 1 in submandibular gland tissues. Results: The positive expression rate of Beclin 1 was significantly higher in radioactive submandibular gland group than that in the control group and submandibular adenitis group ( P 〈0.05).Compared with the control group and the submandibular gland degeneration group, the Beclin 1 expression was up-regulated in the radioactive submandibular gland degeneration group ( P 〈0.05).Conclusion: Radioactive injury could markedly increase the expression of Beclin 1 in salivary gland tissue, suggesting that autophagy may be involved in the progress of radiation-induced salivary gland injury.
