Hidden Narration of Hermitism: Analysis of Social Hermit in Hermann Hesse's “Demian”

赫尔曼·黑塞的小说《德米安》中尽管未出现"隐居"字样,然而通过小主人公辛克莱的视角,其人生导师德米安作为社会型隐者的形象在叙事层面被逐渐呈现:不仅辛克莱观察到了德米安的特立独行,而且作为信息传播途径的谣言和神秘主义色彩浓重的"入定"行为也塑造了他被隐匿的隐士身份。在德米安的辅导下,辛克莱最终也走上了独行者"通向内心"的个体化道路。

Although there are no words like ＂hermit＂ in Hermann Hesse＇s novel Demian, it is yet through the perspective of the protag- onist Sinclair to find that his mentor Demian can be defined as an image of a social recluse on the narrative level： not only Sinclair oh- serves the solitude of Demian, but also the rumor has the function of providing information and the mythical trance makes together the identity of Demian as a hermit. Under the supervision of Demian, Sinclair tries to go on the lonely path of individuation.
