婴宁跟《聊斋志异》中的其他女狐不同,她来到人间不是为了成就某个男性,而是为了自我完成:由异类幻化成人形进入人间后,如何被世俗社会接纳,把自己改造成"人"。她的方式与途径是通过婚姻的洗礼,把"狐性"改造成"人性",由天真浪漫的少女成功转型变为温良贤惠的少妇。婴宁的人生经历是封建社会男权中心意识形态下普通女性命运的一个缩影,清晰地折射出女性从少女转变为女人的复杂而痛苦的心路历程。

Ying Ning is quite different from other fox spirits in the Strange Tales of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi. She came to this world not for the sake of some man,but for the sake of herself——how to make herself accepted by people around when transformed into a woman from a fox. She decided to reform herself from the nature of a fox into that of a human through marriage. She successfully turned from a naive girl into a virtuous woman. Her personal experience is a miniature of the fate of women in the male-dominated feudal society. It demonstrates clearly the intricate and bitter psychological changes of female from a maiden to a woman.
