Paul Auster depicts the American unban spiritual life of ordinary citizens at the turn of the 21 st century in his The Brooklyn Follies,in which the interactions between self and community are represented. The protagonists look forward to the intimacy and harmony of the community due to the confusion of self,which is caused by their broken relationship with the society. They are engaged in the pursuit of the fulfillment of spiritual self by means of creative writing to build the imagined community. Eventually,they struggle to find the ways of realizing the ideal self with the independent self-consciousness by transcending the traditional ideas of community.
