处于跨国文化背景下的严歌苓作为华文文学的新移民小说的新锐代表，在作品中刻画了众多华人形象和美国人形象。因为文化的“异质”性，经严歌苓创造的美国形象发生了多多少少的变异，当然同时也存在着误读和想象；严歌苓笔下的美国人多是被社会边缘化、被遗忘在角落里的人、孤独自由的追求者、理性的实用者以及具有博大胸怀的救赎者。
