如何理解"现代唯物主义"的理论性质是马克思主义哲学研究的一个重要问题。恩格斯认为"现代唯物主义不是哲学而只是世界观",有些学者则主张现代唯物主义是哲学。主张"现代唯物主义是哲学"所依赖的论证存在着逻辑错误,并面临着无法回避的逻辑困难。主张"现代唯物主义不是哲学"则更能得到逻辑和文本的支持。现代唯物主义并不是作为"新哲学"取代了"旧哲学",而是作为新哲学观要求取代旧哲学观,作为新世界观要求取消哲学本身。

A critical issue in the philosophical study of Marxism involves the ways of understanding the theoretical quality of ＂modern materialism＂. While F. Engels holds that ＂modern materialism is no longer a philosophy at all,but simply a world outlook＂,some scholars advocate that modern materialism is a philosophy. The latter exists logical errors in its argument,and faces the inevitable difficulty in logic,but the former is supported by logic and text. Modern materialism is not a ＂new philosophy＂that replaces the ＂old philosophy＂,but a new view of philosophy that will replace the old one as well as a new world outlook that will end philosophy itself.
