随着皮尔斯符号学的发展，自20世纪80年代起，符号学对符号过程的研究在文化与逻辑之外找到了一个新领域：生物符号。生命与环境的互动，意义的前语言结构进入了符号学的视野，这不仅为生物学提供了新思路，更影响了文化符号学的研究。
