China is now the world's largest source market for international tourism, and against this backdrop, there has been rapid expansion in the Chinese cruise sector over the last few years. However, recent indications of slowing growth in the number of Chinese cruise passengers and the closure of a domestic cruise company has brought the outlook for China's cruise market into focus once again. Domestic cruise operators, typically utilising smaller and older ships, have also faced difficulties. SkySea Cruise Line, a joint venture between Carnival and Chinese travel agency Ctrip, will be closed this autumn, with its only vessel sold and likely deployed elsewhere. So, the Chinese cruise market has faced some headwinds recently, but positive drivers remain. China's large population and low ‘penetration rate' suggest that there is significant growth potential in the cruise sector(0.2% of the Chinese population took a cruise in 2017, compared to 3.5% of the US population). Improvements to ticket selling models and diversification of routes are ongoing, and various cruise lines are planning deployment of further large ships from 2020. Overall, despite short-term challenges, China still looks set to play a key and growing role in the cruise sector in the long-term.
