Commissioned by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japanese military authorities, Japanese Christian missionary Yasumura Saburo went to Nanjing in December of 1938. On one hand, he tried to persuade the European and American members of Nanking International Relief Committee to understand the Japanese position, on the other hand, as a Japanese member of the Nanking International Relief Committee he did solve some problems in the relief work.Though he was attached to the Japanese military and his work in Nanjing was also to carry out the order from the Japanese military, yet Yasumura Saburo agreed with the Europeans and Americans to some degree, and morally condemned the occupation of the Japanese army. Although he did not witness the Nanjing Massacre, he was actually one of the few people in the Japanese Christendom who understood the situations of the Nanjing Massacre.
