An Analysis of Zhu Shuangyun's the History of New Opera

1914年上海新剧小说社出版的《新剧史》一书,是我国第一部编年体的话剧史专著,记述了从1899年上海约翰书院、徐汇公学的学生演剧始,至1914年上海新剧"甲寅中兴"止16年间上海早期话剧的发展历程,是目前现存最早的研究话剧史的重要文献之一。该书的作者朱双云,不仅是我国早期学生演剧运动的亲历者,而且还是为数不多的戏剧运动的研究者和实践者。笔者在校勘全书过程中,通过其他文献,对早期学生演剧活动的脉络作了重新梳理,指出书中几处被忽略的存疑问题,以更加接近历史真实的视角,客观地评析朱双云及其《新剧史》。

The History of New Opera published by Shanghai New Drama Novel Publishing House in 1914 is the first chronicle of drama in China. The book, which describes the development of the early Shanghai drama in the 16 years from 1899 to 1914, is one of the important existing literature for the study of early drama. Zhu Shuangyun, the author of the book, is not only a former witness, but also a researcher and practitioner of the early drama movement of our country. However, the History of New Opera was written in a hurry and not well composed. the author, in the course of collating the book, referring to other literatures, chronicles the early students＇ acting activities, and points out several neglected questions in the book, so as to evaluate Zhu Shuangyun and the History of New Opera objectively in a perspective close to the truth of history.
