As a branch of linguistics, English rhetoric mainly discusses how to achieve communicative purpose in proper language in discourse and practical communication. Among them, generalization and specification are important contents involved in English rhetoric, which is of great significance to arrange structure and express viewpoint in writing. This paper studies the generalization and specification of English rhetoric from the aspect of discourse, vocabulary and phrase, so as to provide a reference in better use of rhetoric for communicative purposes.
