A Brief Study of John Fryer's Educational Activities at the Anglo-Chinese School in Shanghai

傅兰雅是著名的传教士、教育家。1865年,他被聘为上海英华书馆的首任校长,这是他抵沪后的第一份正式工作。在英华书馆的三年期间,傅兰雅使书馆从一个默默无闻的机构变成上海有较高知名度的学校,培养了郑观应等近代知名人士。研究傅兰雅在上海英华书馆的教育活动,有助于我们更好地了解近代上海英语教学及中西交流的历史。

John Fryer was a famous British missionary educator. In 1865,he was engaged as first principal of the AngloChinese School,which was his first job obtained in Shanghai. During his three years at the school,he managed to turn the school from an unknown institution into a more well-known school in Shanghai,training ZHENG Guanying and other modern celebrities. Researching into John Fryer's educational activities at the Anglo-Chinese School helps better understand the early Shanghai's history of English education and Sino-foreign exchanges.
