Cuju is an ancient sport and entertainment activity in China. It was called Taju in the pre-Qin Dynasty, Cuju in the Han Dynasty, and Zhuqiu, Cuqiu in the Tang Dynasty. The material and game rules of Cuju changed substantially in the Song Dynasty. Under the guidance of the emperor and the imperial family, the competition of Cuju in Song Dynasty was standardized, women's paticipation in playing Cuju was normal and the way of playing Cuju was various. The development of commodity economy in Song Dynasty promoted the industrialization and commercialization of Cuju. By the late Song Dynasty, the prevalence of culture and the failure of competition system reform led to the gradual decline of Cuju.
