何振基长篇小说《母亲河》主人公贺庆生拥有妻子秀琴筑就的现实的"家的港湾"和异姓妹妹秦岚营建的理想的"女人的港湾";在经历了患难夫妻的相守与龃龉、异姓兄妹的相知相思与情感压抑之后,又有年轻知识女性欧阳意茹理解与追随形成的新的"港湾"。与三个女人的情感纠葛使贺庆生处于爱与恩、情与理、灵与肉的纠结之中,也始终无法走出感恩的思想束缚、既定的社会规范和诡谲的宿命牢笼。《母亲河》"港湾"的寓言,将这部现实主义作品的内涵导向了人心、人性乃至人生精神求索的高度。

He Qingsheng, the hero of Mother River written by He Zhenji, has three ＂harbors＂ built by three women： a realistic ＂harbour of home＂ built by his wife Xiu Qin, an ideal ＂harbour of female＂ built by his sister in law Qin Lan, and a new ＂harbor＂ built by the young educated woman named Ouyang Yiru who understands and follows He Qingsheng after his experiencing the happiness and conflict between a couple and the motional repression to his sister in law. His emotional entanglements with the three women torture him in the struggle of love and grace, emotion and ration, soul and body. He could not get out of the ideological shackles of gratitude, established social norms and strange fate. The metaphor of ＂harbor＂ in Mother River highlights the connotation of this realistic work, guiding readers to question their inner feeling, human nature and even human spirit.
