Professor ZHANG Xue-wen＇s experience in using couplet medicines of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari is summarized in this article, which included the following contents. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae could be used in benefiting qi for activating blood circulationand bringing forth the new through the old; the combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong could be used for benefiting qi for activating blood circulation and dispelling wind and relieving pain. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Radix Ginseng could be used for benefiting primordial qi, and coordinating yin and yang. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Radix Angelicae Sinensis could be used for benefiting qi and nourishing blood, and lowering fire due to yin deficiency. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae could be used for invigorating lung and benefiting qi, and invigorating the spleen. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Rhizoma Dioscoreae could be used for invigorating spleen and benefiting yin, and astringing for arresting vital essence. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Radix Aeoniti Lateralis Preparata could be used for warming yang and benifiting qi, and benefiting defensive qiand consolidating superficies. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae could be used for benefiting qi and raising yang qi, and inducing diuresis for removing edema. The combination of Radix Astragali seu Hedysari and Radix Glyeyrrhizae could be used for supplementing deficiency and reducing poison, and expelling pus and removing toxicity.
