As a Russian critical realistic writer, Gogol strongly criticizes the hierarchical bureaucracy under the Tsarist regime by vividly describing an ＂obscure character＂ in Overcoat Along with the clue of ＂sign - text - culture - semiosphere＂, this paper applies Lotman＇s cultural semiotic views to explore the semiotic features and deep meanings in the text, thus helping readers have an insight into the inner world of ＂obscure characters＂ under the despotism .
