Analysis of the Image of Lao Can in The Travel of Lao Can

《老残游记》是中国古代晚清四大谴责小说之一,以主人公老残的游踪串联小说情节,描绘了官场中的丑恶现象。本文针对主人公老残的形象作三个方面的解读与分析,首先是老残形象的具体内涵,包括医者之形、官者之心以及文者之才、侠者之气两大层次。其次是将老残形象与《儒林外史》中的儒生形象作对比分析;最后则从三个层面来阐述老残形象的意义。

The Travel of Lao Can written by Liu E is one of the four satirical novels in the late Qing Dynasty, whose plots are linked by the travel and trace of the leading character Lao Can, criticizing the social corruption and attempts to depict the hypocrisy and ugliness in officialdom. This paper interprets and analyzes the image of the leading character Lao Can in this novel from three aspects： firstly, Lao Can was an image which mixes the extrinsic identity of a doctor, the inner mind of an official, the genius of a scholar and the spirit of a chivalrous person ; secondly, it compares the image of Lao Can with the Confucian images in The Scholars ; lastly, it elaborates the meaning of the image of the protagonist Lao Can from three levels.
