Cold and Warm Colors in Hongloumeng and English Translation

阐释《红楼梦》中的冷暖色彩,并赏析杨宪益译本The Dream of Red Mansions和霍克斯译本The Story of the Stone中的色彩翻译,探究冷暖色彩隐喻及其英译。在对色彩词的翻译上,杨宪益先生较为忠实地再现了中国传统的色彩文化特点和中国人的隐喻心理。霍克斯先生囿于不同的生活环境、生活体验和认知,从而形成不同于杨先生的色彩隐喻。

The propose of this paper is to explain the cold and warm colors in Hongloumeng, as well as appreci- ate two translation versions：The Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Xianyi and The Story of the Stone translated by Hawkes. Based on the two versions, it attempts to explore the metaphor of cold and warm colors, in addition to their English translations. The study finds that,in the translation of color words, Mr. Yang Xia- nyi faithfully reproduces the characteristics of traditional Chinese color culture and the metaphorical psychology of the Chinese people. Due to limited to different living environment, life experience and cognition, Mr. Hawkes forms different color metaphors from Mr. Yang＇ s.
