This article traces the professionaJ organizations of architecture in four different countries--the US, France, Germany, and Sweden. The comparison indicates how differently each nation conceives of both architecture and professionalism. The issues of how the profession relates to state governance, to the public, to the firm owners, to the employees, and to education are all explored. Motivating this research was the hope that certain strategies in one country--strategies that are more successful in supporting architecture culturally and financially^ould be transferred to countries where architecture is weaker. The nationalism embedded in the different professional organizations indicates that this transfer would be difificuit. Nevertheless, common struggles are worth identifying and shared strategies merit consideration. Indeed, even if some countries support architects more strongly than others, the general dissatisfaction with the profession of architecture in all four countries indicates the need for a radical rebranding of architectural work.
