The Song Dynasty witnessed a prosperous Sino-Japanese maritime trade. Xie Guoming, A Chinese merchant born in Lin'an in Song Dynasty, traveled to Japan and stayed in Hakata engaging in cross-border trade. He built Joten-ji Temple in Hakata, bought properties in Oro-shima, and performed charitable deeds, thus known as the chief merchant then. Learning that the Jiangshan Temple in Hangzhou was damaged in a fire, he transported timber from Japan to aid the reconstruction. Many Chinese merchants including Xie Guoming, travelled to Japan during Song Dynasty and established a Chinese community around Hakata, becoming the most typical Chinatown for the early overseas Chinese. Chinese culture was spread to Japan via this type of maritime trade and influenced Japan’s culture later.
