To avoid the defect of hard to accurate determination of index weight in previous rock mass quality assessment, put forward to use the catastrophe progression method in the assessment. Based on the catastrophe progression theory, has selected rock quality indi- ces of rock mass penetration rate, rock mass acoustic velocity, structural face interval, structural face friction coefficient and uniaxial compressive strength as factors impacting rock mass quality assessment hierarchical structure modeling. Simultaneously, according to each factor corresponding classification basis to use random interpolation build training samples carried out catastrophe progression value computation after training sample data preprocessing; again based on training sample catastrophe progression value and actual experi- ence grade value to build rock mass quality assessment catastrophe progression criterion. Finally, based on detection samples carried out verification for rock mass quality catastrophe progression assessment model. The studied result has shown that the catastrophe pro- gression method can be efficiently used in rock mass quality assessment with good application prospect.
