由河南、河东、河内三郡所构成的三河地区属于西汉王朝的核心统治区。西北简牍资料的统计表明,西汉边地戍卒及其他人员当中,有不少来自于三河地区,只是三郡在参与的程度及方式上存在差异。大体而言,河内以提供物资装备为主,而河东、河南则以人员赴边为主。就赴边人员的性质而言,河东赴边者多为戍卒,而河南、河内因其他原因赴边者较多,这应当与两地交通便捷、商业发达等因素有关,同时也可能与两地官办经济机构对力役人员的吸纳较多有关。
