In his novel In Praise of the Stepmother, a tale of incest in a Peruvian middle-class family, Vargas Llosa uses a particular narrative method which combines words and images. This article studies the abundant visual elements in this novel to investigate the connection between Llosa＇s aesthetic experiment and his political ideology. The highly visual narrative, considering its historical background and the author＇s personal experience in political activities, indicates Llosa＇s political inclinations towards supporting individual freedom, protecting private property, and beautifying the middle-class life style.
