The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, a novel by the Dominican American writer Junot Díaz, portrays the transnational interactions between America and the Dominican Republic as exemplified by the life of the Oscar family. Based on Karl Marx's idea of communicative practice, this article analyzes the patterns of communication practice performed by Oscar and his sister Lula and examines the influence that multiple communication objects exert on immigrant groups, contending that the key to subjectivity construction is independence and autonomy during communicative practices.
