Power exists in spatial structures and penetrates them in microscopic ways. Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day unveils the "English countryside" myth of the British Empire and reveals that the natural scenery and country manors in England are shaped by imperial power. Artificially constructed, the landscape of the English countryside has become the yardstick for demarcating self and the other. The country estate demonstrates a strict hierarchical order through the distribution and division of inner and outer spaces. Through his portrayal of the spatial structure of power, Ishiguro exposes the disciplinary mechanism of the British Empire. In this way, he enables his readers to comprehend spatialized power as a source of repression around the world.
