Disaffiliating from the convention that has researched on local colorist features and autobiographical characteristics in The Song of the Lark, this paper studies its representation of modernity. In the novel, the "hybridized" countryside, as the regionalized product of modernity, becomes "the third space" with the features of the premodern and the modern. But, the homogenized city is resulted from the nationalization of modernity, and the emergence of cosmopolitan is the ideal existential mode of subject in the context of global modernity and becomes the bridge that connects the interaction among such binary relations as the premodern/the modern, the country/the city and nation/the world. From the triple visions of region, nation and the world, The Song of the Lark, inspects the merits and demerits incurred by the historical practices of modernity, and thereby proves that literary regionalism as a genre has participated in, reflected upon and reconstructed the historical discourse of modernity.
