In Memory of Radio presents Amiri Baraka's meditation on media's influences upon the black people's identity andthe social morality. Firstly, it is about the power of media and Black identity: in the mid 20th century, thc media rcprcscnted by radio potentially influences and even controls people's attention. However, Americans' believing the words propagandized byradio, and their seeming unquestioning acceptance of technology and the middle class popular culture create the loss ofthe black people's identity, the error of differing goodness from evil, and the misleading of life's direction. Secondly, it concerns about the power of media influencing social morality: when radio was replaced by new television technology as a dyingmedium, the poet grew mature and began to understand the dual meaning of radio in the poem. On the one hand, racistsbroadcast false promises of rights and morality; on the other hand, fictional black " shadow" heroes use the radio to teach pocts and black Americans to turn black shame into a hard won love for themselves.
