Welty's Deconstruction of Southern Traditional Sexual Politics:Taking Moon Lake and Petrified Men as Examples

作为南方文艺复兴时期的代表性女作家,韦尔蒂主要以短篇小说见长,其作品的重要主题之一就是聚焦美国南方社会中的两性关系以及其中所隐含的性别政治。通过对韦尔蒂著名短篇小说《月亮湖》和《石化人》的分析,阐释了韦尔蒂对南方传统性别政治的解构,揭示了韦尔蒂对南方女性的性解放的期许和对南方女性摆脱传统性别价值观、获取独立自主权的渴望。《月亮湖》反应了未成年少女对南方传统性别政治的反叛,而《石化人》则体现了婚姻中妇女对性别政治的颠覆。

As a representative female writer in the Southern Renaissance, Welty is mainly renowned for her short story. One of the important themes of her works is the focus on the relationship between men and women in the South, as well as the implicit gender politics. This article selects Welty’s two famous short stories to reveal Welty’s deconstruction of traditional sexual politics in the South. Through the analysis of these two short stories, this article reveals Welty’s expectation for the liberation of Southern women and her desire for Southern women to get rid of the traditional gender values and gain independence. Moon Lake reflects the rebellion of girls against the traditional gender politics in the South, while the Petrified Men reflects the subversion of sexual politics in marriage.
