In 2017, the government of the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia pushed hard for an ＂independent referendum＂ in violation of the national constitution by citing the facts that it used to be an independent state in history and the public opinions in most regions within the country supported its independence, which has seriously affected the domestic political and economic order, and social unity in Spain. This paper intends, through sorting out the involving historical, political, social and economic factors of Catalonia, to elaborate on the formation and development of the Catalonia issue, interpret the gains and losses of the Spanish central government in disposing the ＂independent referendum＂ in Catalonia, and analyze the future development direction of the issue, believing the independent tendency in Catalonia will exist for a long time, but with limited space for development.
