古代希腊,在城邦相互之间不断冲突和城邦联合反对外族入侵的过程中,产生了追求和维护城邦独立的文化传统。随着时间的推移,"城邦独立"成为某些城邦追逐自身利益、维护霸主地位的工具,在"城邦独立"的旗号下,部分强势城邦的地位被削弱,甚至某些城邦被肢解。

In the process of the continuous struggle among the poleis and the resisting against the foreign invasion,a cultural tradition to pursuit the polis' independence emerged in ancient Greek world.But as time lapsing,the polis' independence became an instrument for some poleis to pursuit their private profit and protecting their hegemony,and under cover of the polis' independence,some powerful poleis were weakened,even some poleis were disunited.
