An Analysis of Caddy's Tragic Fate from the Perspective of Puritanism

福克纳小说中的女主人公凯蒂美丽淳朴、善良正义,但在清教思想统治下的美国南方社会以及凯蒂家庭对妇女的摧残和压迫下,最终沦落为妓女,被家人和社会抛弃。凯蒂的悲剧反映了美国旧南方的腐朽和社会矛盾以及清教文化对人性的压制和摧残。凯蒂的悲剧既是清教传统思想影响的缩影,又是宗教和种族恶行时代的产物。本文以凯蒂的失贞堕落分析为主线,从宗教与家庭角度对凯蒂悲剧的内在原因进行分析和探讨。

Caddy is the heroine of The Sound and The Fury , she is a beautiful, warm-hearted girl. However, under the Puritan ideology of American society and the destruction and depression on women, she eventually descends to a prostitute and is abandoned by her family. Caddy’s tragedy reflects the decay and contradiction of the plantation slavery system, and the oppression and deprivation of human nature by Puritan culture as well as the cruelty and brutality of the Southern traditional values to the Southern women. From the viewpoints of religion, and family environment, the essay makes a further analysis on the origin of Caddy’s tragedy, exploring the fate of American society and even of the human beings.
