Translation Practice and Translation Criticism from Perspective of Economic Spillover Effect Theory

翻译不应局限于语言层面和文本层面的对应与否,而是应以翻译行为产生的价值为核心。价值是衡量译者翻译观、定夺翻译方法与策略,决定翻译目的、翻译原则和翻译标准的首要因素。翻译的价值判断取决于翻译的社会效应,产生负溢出效应的翻译是译者力避的无价值翻译,产生正溢出效应的翻译是译者应全力追求的目标。微观上看似有所"偏离"原作的译品,宏观上往往会取得与原作殊途同归的对等社会效应;表面上看似"紧扣"原作的译作,实际上却与原作南辕北辙。因此,译品与原作在翻译语言层面的对等与否不是判断翻译价值的标准,所产生的溢出社会效应如何才是决定译文优劣的根本。

Translation practice and translation criticism theory are dealt with in the present paper from the interdisciplinary perspective of economic spillover effect theory. The paper argues that value should be the focus in translating rather than the equivalence of the language forms concerned. Value is the primary element in evaluating a translator＇s views of translation, in deciding on translation purpose, translation principles and translation criteria as well as translating methods and strategies. The value judgment about the translated works rests with their social effects. The translated works with negative social effects are worthless while those with positive social effects should be much valued and pursued. Microscopically, the translated version might somewhat ＂deviate＂ from the original, but it may often achieve the equivalent so cial effects with the original on the whole. Seemingly, the translated version seems to be much ＂close＂ to the original, but actually it is a far cry from the original in terms of social effects. Therefore, the value of translation is judged not by the equivalence in linguistic forms between the two languages involved, but by the spillover social effects brought about by the translated works.
