Babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite Babesia. This disease is characterized by a host complex immune response that involves both cellular and humoral immunity. Cytokines play an important role in the process of Babesia infection and are closely related to the development and progression of babesiosis and its prognosis. Proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-2, and IL-12, are needed to initiate an effective inflammatory response and promote the elimination of Babesia parasites. In contrast, the cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 inhibit the cell-mediated inflammatory response by down-regulating the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This article specifically describes, in terms of function, how TNF-α, IFN-γ, interleukins, and other cytokines play an important role in the development of babesiosis.
