This paper discusses the secondary development of traditional Chinese medicine and the current situation of the use of ethnomedicines, while deeply analyzes the characteristics and shortcomings of ethnomedicine prescriptions to clarify the necessity of prescription optimization of ethnomedicine. On the basis of summarizing the optimization design methods of traditional Chinese medicine group prescriptions, we elaborate the idea of optimization of ethnomedicine prescriptions originated from the design. That is, starting from the source of the compound new drug design, taking the compound prescription of the ethnomedicines with definite curative effect as the optimization target, formulating appropriate strategies and methods to carry out targeted research and upgrading for the prescriptions; also propos the research strategy and basic principles of prescription optimization of ethnomedicine with the goal of 'clarifying the relationship of compatibility, increasing and decreasing the composition rationally, approving the dose of compatibility and defining the clinical indications'.
