This paper introduces the types and molecular structure of rheology modifiers for waterborne coatings as well as the thickening mechanisms. The rheology properties derived from different rheology modifiers are discussed. In addition, the factors influencing the effect of rheology modifiers on waterborne coatings and related research progress are elaborated.
