This article takes a case study of the Peng clansmen association in Singapore and investigates how clansmen associations have become an informal educational device which objectifies Chinese cultural tradition and reinforces Chinese identity within the nationalistic framework.I argue that the modern nation-state has disciplined the individual’s cultural identities via the clansmen association. It is through performing the ritualized celebration of festivals and through promoting Mandarin-speaking that a Chinese Singaporean identity permeates further into the local community. This paper investigates the new meaning of ancestor worship at the hometown of this group of clansmen in Singapore. While the activities in the ’homeland’ have drawn the Singaporean Pengs closer to the clansmen in China, these activities also further asserted their identity of being Singaporean Chinese. In response to globalization, worldwide clansmen gatherings show that ’lateral connections’ between the Chinese in different localities around the globe have been strengthened. It also reveals a new configuration of Chinese identity beyond the borders of the nation-state.
