Diasporic Muslim Identities in Literary Representation:Constructing Cultural Hybridity in A Coming of Age Narrative

阿拉伯裔美国穆斯林女作家摩加·卡夫(Mohja Kahf)于2006年出版的半自传体畅销小说《戴桔红色头巾的女孩》真实展现了美国阿拉伯裔穆斯林移民社会的生活图景。论文通过追溯小说女主人公的成长历程,探讨阿拉伯裔穆斯林作为美国社会离散族裔的文化身份构建。研究以女主人公的成长叙事为主线,围绕小说蕴含的三大主题展开:第一,女主人公家庭作为美国新移民感受到的由东西方文化碰撞所产生的"文化镜像"与"道德恐慌";第二,女主人公作为离散族裔个体所经历的身份困境;第三,女主人公如何在离散文化语境中构建"新女性"文化身份。通过聚焦女主人公卡德拉·沙米跨越不同文化语境重塑文化身份的历程,试图探索阿拉伯裔穆斯林作为少数宗教群体在美国社会中面临的重要问题。

The paper explores the representation of diasporic Muslim identities in a coming-of-age narrative：Arab American female novelist Mojha Kahf’s bestseller The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf published in 2006. It exam？ines how the religious diasporic hybrid identity is mobilized within the female protagonist Khadra Shamy, includingthe ways she struggles to negotiate her identity across different cultural terrains and gendered, racialised, intergener？ational configurations. It attempts to show how these literary representations construct --and help conceptualize-the ways we understand diasporic Muslims in the U.S. The individual experiences as narrated in the novel illumi？nate a series of essential socio-political questions facing the community as a religious minority in a secular context.This study will address these questions through the representation of cultural hybridity in the literary narrative with？in the framework of postcolonial theory. It focuses on three constructs of the novel central to the conceptualizing of ahybrid identity of the female protagonist： firstly, the mirror images and moral panics that generate cultural clashes inthe East-West encounter, which foreground, secondly, the predicament of an ambivalent existence of the protago？nist as a diasporic individual, and thirdly, the ways she forges her hybrid identity as a New Woman within the dia？sporic context.
