山姆·费舍是哈金的长篇小说《自由生活》中的重要角色。该人物的刻画是以美国著名的垮掉派诗人艾伦·金斯堡为原型的。哈金此举旨在突出山姆在武男追求诗歌艺术的道路上所起到的精神导师的作用,增加人物及情节发展的可信度。从某种程度而言,武男以诗为志的理想是离不开山姆对他的影响的。同时,哈金对宗教主题的复杂化处理衬托了主人公武男对诗歌的信仰,对自由的执着。主人公对诗歌的追求也重新诠释了美国梦的内涵。对武男而言,诗歌就是宗教,诗歌就是自由,诗歌就是他心中的美国梦。

Sam Fisher is a very important character in Ha Jin＇s novel A Free Life. In this novel, Ha Jin takes Allen Ginsberg as the prototype for the character, on the one hand, to emphasize his influence upon Wu Nan in his pursuit of poetry writing, and on the other hand, to increase the credibility of the protagonist and the story. To some extent, Wu Nan＇s dream of being a poet cannot be realized without Sam. Meanwhile, the complex attitude of Wu Nan towards religion and his pursuit of being a poet illustrates that, for him, poetry means belief, freedom, and the American dream.
