The marine Lower Carboniferous corals spread widely in many provinces of China except in a few oldands. Based on the study of corals, four zoogeographical regions are apparent for the Lower Carboniferous corals in China, namely, the South China region, the Northwest China region, the Tianshan-Xiugan region and the South Xizang region. The Aikuanian coral fauna shows distinguishable divisions of zoogeographical regions. The characteristic form of the coral fauna develops into 'regional element', which comprises such genera as Cystophrentis and Pseu-douralinia in the South China zoogeographical region; Siphonophyllia and Hum-boldtia in the Northwest China zoogeographical region; Cyathaxonia and Hapsip-phyllum in the Tianshan zoogeographical region) Ekvasoptyllum and Sychnoelasma in the South Xizang zoogeographical region. The coral fauna of Tatang Age is very abundant, and is represented by the genera Thysanophyllum and Yuanophyllum. They are widely distributed in the zoogeographical regions of South China, Northwest China and Tianshan-Xingan.This coral fauna may be called the'Sinican type'. It includes such genera as Thysanophyllum, Kwangsiphyllum, yuanophgllum, Kueichouphyllum, Arachnolasma, Neoclisiophyllum, Heterocaninia, etc. It must be pointed out, however, that the heterocorals of Tatang Age are very abundant and are extensively distributed in China, they appearing in the Late Tatang age.
