As the author observes,some vocational college English teachers believe that linguistics seems to be useless to the students of the advanced vocational colleges and thus be of little help for the English teaching in the above-mentioned educational institutions. But as a matter of fact,the mastery of linguistics is vital for the Eng-lish teachers in the advanced vocational colleges. The role the English teachers play in teaching and research requires them to improve their quality. Furthermore,the mastery of linguistics proves an effective means for promoting the teaching and research in English. This article aims to probe into the importance and necessity of learning linguistics and meanwhile to appeal to English teachers in vocational colleges to learn some linguistic knowledge.
