“Fall or rise lied only in the reading”: on the significance of literary space of Xiugarden

清代扬州休园是徽商长龄郑氏移居扬州后所建的私家园林,是一个典型的文学活动空间。休园不仅是徽商家风传承的纽带,郑氏家族文学集群的孕育地,还是清代扬州诗文集会的重要场所,在当时的徽商圈和文化圈都有较大的影响,在徽商园林中较有代表性。作为具有文学修养、人文情怀的儒商,郑氏以园林为依托,与当时文学家、史学家之间交往密切,文学活动频繁而持久,促成了城市文学中心的形成,推动了文学的传播,成为清代扬州文坛的一段佳话。

In the Qing Dynasty, Xiugarden was a private garden built by Huizhou merchants surnamed Zheng who had emigrated to Yangzhou. It was a typical space for literary activities. Xiugarden was not only the link of the inheritance of the Huizhou merchants＇ family style, the breeding ground of the family literature , but also the important place of literature assembly of Yangzhou in the Qing Dynasty. It had great influence on the Huizhou merchants circle and cultural circle at that time, and was representative in the Huizhou merchants gazden.As a Confucian businessman with literary culture and humanistic feelings, Zheng was based on the garden, closely interacted with the writers and historians at that time.In the Xiugarden, literary activities were frequent and lasting. It contributed to the formation of the city literature center, promoted the dissemination of literature, and became a good word in the literary world of Yangzhou in the Qing Dynasty.
