Relationship between Madam Xian and Folk Custom in Western Guangdong

冼夫人是南朝梁、陈、隋时期的俚人女英雄。她约束族人,使之遵循儒家礼仪;平定叛乱,维护中央统一;教育子孙,忠贞传家。她对粤西农业发展、儒风的形成、游艺节庆、地方信仰等方面的发展起到了重要作用。时至今日,冼夫人诞已成为粤西地方的重要节令,迎神、游神、上军坡等形式成为颇具地方特色的民俗活动。冼夫人信仰是粤西普及的地方信仰。

Madam Xian is a folk heroine in dynasties of Liang,Chen and Sui in western Guangdong. In the process of changing from vulgar custom of Slang nationality to Chinese style in western Guangdong,Madam Xian played a key role. She restrained her clansmen to conform the Confucian etiquette. She calmed the rebellion broken out in western Guangdong to maintain the unity of the central government. Today,Madame Xian＇s birthday has become an important festival and belief in her has become a popular local belief in western Guangdong.
