Why We Still Need to Read Alois Riegl?:A Reflection on Constructing the Value System of Architectural Heritage

By analyzing the value system of historical buildings conducted by Austrian art historian Alois Riegl, the contradiction in Riegl＇s thought is explained in this article he was not only confined to the context of historical determinism in the late 19th century, but also accepted the transition of aesthetic judgment from priori and abstract to subjective and individual. At the same time, Riegl revealed the driving force of the modern cult of the historic monument is a common human emotion, breaking the nineteenth century national context. The contradiction in Riegl＇s philosophical thought and concept of art history was reflected in the historical building value judgment and practice strategies that he proposed. His theory still inspires the development of heritage protection theory.
