There are two marks in Shuowen Jiezi: and , which Xu Shen labeled respectively as the marks used for pause and full stop. They are thought in most modem linguistic books as the earliest punctuation marks in ancient China, indicating that punctuation marks existed in ancient China. This paper, through the analysis to the cited examples in Biography of Dongfang Shuo in Records of the Grand Historian, intends to prove that those marks are the signs for where the reading stopped, not the punctuation marks.
