Oscar Wilde, a representative of the nineteenth Century aestheticism, is famous for his plays, poetry, fairy tales andnovels. Critics usually analyze Wilde's fairy tales from the perspective of aestheticism, but pay little attention to the social andhistorical background, such as the political thoughts and Wilde's personal experience. This thesis tries to analyze Wilde's fairy talesfrom the perspective of sociohistorical criticism so as to understand the purpose of Wilde's creation, and then proves that Wilde is nota aestheticist who only focuses on the appearance. His work is full of sympathy for the lower-class people and yearning for thedemocratic republic.
