Repressor element-1 silencing transcription factor/the neuron-restrictive silencing factor(REST/NRSF) is a DNA zinc finger binding protein that binds to certain specific acting elements. The histones in their sequences can be deacetylated. REST/NRSF is a transcriptional repressor which acts via epigenetic remodeling to silence target genes. In recent years, several studies have shown that NRSF-mediated transcriptional repression of specific genes is an important component in the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain. This article reviews the recent studies on REST/NRSF and neuropathic pain.
