Drawing from Michel Foucault's theory of heterotopies, this paper tries to dig deeper into Billy Budd, the classical work by Herman Melville. This work can be taken as a canonical text to exemplify the interrelationship between the construction of multi-heterotopies in the work and the production of myriad textual implications. The heterotopies of prison and crisis in the novella as well as the mirror relation set between Billy and Claggart are sophisticated strategies, which dramatize characters as well as elements that motivate their actions. Besides, the typical discipline and punishment in Bellipotent reveals vividly the intrinsic relation between heterotopies and order. What is more, the contrast between the metaphor of utopia embodied in Rights of Man and the construction of heterotopies in Bellipotent completes the artistic transformation of a sea trial in the end of the 18th century. In all, Billy Budd presents the clam and profound reflection from Melville on the industrial and political system of contemporary America.
