内容丰富的《儒林外史》有一个重要的主题,那就是推崇德行。作品对德行的宣扬使读者体会到吴敬梓化成天下、拯救人心的良苦用意和创作意图。吴敬梓以德行为标准衡量、评价人物,并运用多种艺术手法刻画人物形象,突出德行在社会生活中的重要价值,为《儒林外史》宣扬德行这一思想主题服务。可以说,"德行"是读懂《儒林外史》这部巨著的关键所在。

Praising virtue highly in the book shows the creative and deep intention of the writer, WU Jingzi, who wants to save the manners and morals of the world. WU jingzi evaluates people by the standard of ＂virtue＂ and portrays the characters by a variety of writing techniques to emphasize the value of ＂virtue＂in the social life.
