Herzog is the masterpiece of American novelist Saul Bellow. In the work, Bellow describes the alienation psychological mode of the protagonist Herzog but refuses to believe that highly developed society with material civilization destroys the values of human beings. He tries to affirm the value of human beings and restore the truth of human existence through the pursuit of human nature in the alienated world. Therefore, Herzog is not lost in the alienated spiritual predicament, but gains hope and the path out of the predicament. This paper aims to analyzes Herzog’s alienated psychological model and the way out of the predicament, so as to reveal Bellow’s concern for the essence of human existence and the spiritual predicament of human beings in the modern society.
