从1960年代起，非人灵长类动物是不是有语言和能够掌握语言的问题,就深深吸引着一批动物行为的研究者。解答这个问题有助于人类了解语言的进化以及思维和认知的本质。进入21世纪前后，日本学者松泽哲郎又把这一研究领域向前推进了一步。

Since 1960 s animal behavior researchers have been interested in questions concerning animal language cognition.The answers to them are helpful to understand the essence of language and mind cognitive evolution. Since the beginning of 21 st century, Japanese primatologist Tetsuro Matsuzawa had been pushing comparative cognitive studies forward through the Ai(a female chimpanzee) Project.
